Don’t Miss the Eerie Beauty of Devil’s Kitchen (Guna Caves)

Kodaikanal may be known for its misty lakes and gentle pine forests, but hidden in its folds lies a place that feels like a scene from a gothic novel — the Devil’s Kitchen, now more famously known as Guna Caves. If you're the kind of traveler who’s drawn to mystery, natural wonder, and a hint of the supernatural, this is one spot you simply cannot skip.

At Heygotrip, we’re all about chasing places that spark stories — and trust us, this one’s got layers of legend, film history, and straight-up natural drama.

So... Why “Devil’s Kitchen”?

Legend says that back in the day, before Google Maps and Instagram reels, locals called this place Devil’s Kitchen because the rock formations looked like — wait for it — cooking pots used by demons. Okay, probably not Michelin-star demons, but still.

In 1992, the Tamil movie Guna starring Kamal Haasan was filmed here. After that, people started calling it Guna Caves. Since then, the place has had a mix of movie fame and spooky charm.

Nature’s Hidden Labyrinth

Nestled between the towering Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves remain cloaked in dense forest and swirling mist for most of the year. The caves themselves are not fully accessible to the public due to their treacherous depth and narrow openings, but the fenced viewing area offers a hauntingly beautiful perspective into this geological marvel.

Even without full access, the atmosphere is magnetic — tree roots twist over mossy rocks, monkeys chatter overhead, and the wind whistles through the gaps like whispered secrets from the earth.

Is It Haunted?

Short answer: Maybe.

Long answer: Who cares?

It feels haunted in the best way possible — the kind where you want to take 37 pictures and write poetry about fog. Just don’t wander off the path or try to channel spirits. The monkeys might laugh at you.

A Walk on the Wilder Side

To reach the caves, you’ll need to take a short walk through a dense pine forest — an experience in itself. The forest is often carpeted with fallen needles and drenched in cool mist, making the path feel like a journey into a forgotten world.

The whole area is a photographer’s dream: twisted roots, tangled foliage, and shafts of sunlight piercing the mist. But it’s not just about the photo op. There’s something visceral about being there — like you’ve stepped into a place that hasn't quite decided if it belongs to the natural world or a more mythical one.

Timings: Usually open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Whether you're a solo wanderer or road-tripping with your favorite crew, Heygotrip recommends putting Guna Caves on your Kodaikanal bucket list. It’s eerie, it’s epic, and it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after the mist clears.
